Lessons learned on a cross country trip

The world is not a safe place
People do not always keep their word
A dog really is a man's best friend
And the sun always rises tomorrow

Politicians lie
Babies die
And airplanes sometimes crash
I wish it were not so

But often
The good really do die young
All of that hope and promise
Wasted in the grave

Every heart is a mystery
Parts so dark they remain unfathomed
Because they are
Unfathomable

Some scars always hurt
When the cold rain falls
When the mist of morning
Covers whatever smile the earth can muster

There will be treasures forever undiscovered
There will be mountains you did not climb

There will be tender words that stick in your throat
And are never spoken

There will be soft and timid kisses that long to be shared
And are not

And at the end
Lying on your bed

There will be deeper sorrows
That still remain

And joys remembered
That can never be forgotten
