Lost & Found

I saw a shoe on the sidewalk I found one glove in the elevator Yesterday, there was a blind man With a white cane in McDonald's All of us have lost things Some more precious than others I still have two kidneys But I know a man who donated one To a complete stranger Some things we give away Some are stolen Other things Just wear out I only noticed this yesterday When the black man in the shiny warm ups Shared his table with the blind man But I stayed seated Ate my salad Like I do every day And felt Nothing dg 10/25/11 Sent from my iPad http://jdavidgamble.blogspot.com/

About Conestoga's

I have seen the pictures The discarded chairs The abandoned Boxes and baby beds Those cross-country treks Always exceed our estimations Hills are higher Roads more rutted Our transportation Unreliable At some unforeseen bump We lose things And recalibrate the Hierarchy of Need What was Essential Is now Expendable Naked I stand and the mirror shows Scars But What remains is Leaner Lighter Stronger dg 10/22/11 Sent from my iPad http://jdavidgamble.blogspot.com/

Wednesday at the Hickory Chapel

Attending the funeral home Which now seems so incongruent I made a schedule change after My father's call Who has assumed the profound mantel of Messenger of recent departures And my high school friend Fulfilled his role as the eldest child And dutifully recounted His mother's decline into The dark, unjust halls of the mindless Her Alzheimer's was only the first dying As I have not seen them in almost 30 years I cannot say if there were others involved As I worked the room With hugs and polite kisses The smell of death descended again And as I left the bland but well-lit building The scent only lingered I later recognized it as my own The skin and bone I have shed and killed like The snake-skin it was I will not stay small Oh the discomfort of Sliding through holes No longer safe Or accommodating dg 10/20/11 Sent from my iPad http://jdavidgamble.blogspot.com/

still bourne

the limping hero walks across the snow covered park as the camera pans we see the building, brightly lit to which he walks soaring music scores this story of solitude and it is ours, too we have fought and wounded foes we were bloodied by blows unscripted his shock and distant stare we understand but the stories diverge when the credits roll and we change the channel exhausted from the sorrows of a plot unresolved dg 9/10/11 10/9/11 Sent from my iPad http://jdavidgamble.blogspot.com/

signs and wonders

the church sign said "Hope lives here" but i must confess skepticism the words placed before three lines of Spanish which i found equally unintelligible i wondered is hope a person or only a promise that can be broken like communion wafers or christmas candy if hope lives there is it an exclusive? in any event the parking lot proved that we are buying what they are selling trips to mexico by dying patients shows only that desperate people will believe almost anything dg 10/9/11 Sent from my iPad http://jdavidgamble.blogspot.com/

now

I saw a man aimless, walking you could tell he had lost things many and every there was no business card with title no car payment of a late model import sedan with satellite radio or heated mirrors now on cold days everything fogs up and there is no warm up cycle there are now no conference calls he announces and people attend even if they wanted to refuse now everyone can refuse yes, so many things lost no mortgages, no 401(k) all future obligations and rewards are no more but as he looks up you pass by as far away as the sidewalk width allows he knows the greatest loss that no dollar can measure is the man who dreamed who planned who occasionally deemed to care about anyone anything anywhere all that remains is now and weather and hunger and fear and loss dg 10/1/11 Sent from my iPad http://jdavidgamble.blogspot.com/
