What you see. What you fail to see

I saw her face
Silent now in glossy print
I could not hear her sobs
But I understood her grief

I saw the wreckage
The remainder of long division
Calculated by tornado
I could not smell the devastation
I could not feel the fear
But I remembered the fragility of existence

I saw the homeless man
Selling his papers
And have no idea how
He survives
What he substitutes for
My soft bed
And an early morning embrace
Sleepy and soft
But I am pained
Barely knowing his gains and losses

And for those whose belief
Allows only their version of truth
Whose heart is so small that only
Fear, anger and pride reside
I pity them
Their damnation
To never know
Love
Compassion
Or loss
