The Introvert's Birthday

the day begins like any other
sleepy dreams fade with overnight's darkness
coffee is miraculous
lattes are god's gift
but, dick cheney is still breathing, so
even urgent prayers sometimes go unanswered

i remember the toy
a blue globemaster airplane
i was 11
i had it maybe a day before
the hinged, nose section
was broken
that and the surprise new bicycle
are my two happy
childhood memories
that are mother related

weebles wobble
but they don't fall down
and birthday candles
ideally, they multiply
it may be asexual reproduction
i can't say

there are so many questions
for which i expected answers
i have learned
to be thankful
i care enough
to still
sometimes ask

happy birthday to me
happy birthday to me
happy birthday dear
david
happy birthday
to
me
